The Best Gifts Have a Story: Why Handcrafted Holiday Gifts Are Worth Planning Ahead

By John Pilkington, Carpenter & Co-Owner, Pilkington Woodworks

The pumpkins are still on the porch, the leaves are beginning to change, and here I am talking about Christmas presents.

I know. It seems a little early.

But when it comes to giving someone a gift that's truly special, getting an early start can make all the difference.

At Pilkington Woodworks, we believe some of the best gifts aren't found on a store shelf. They're created with someone in mind. And one of the things I enjoy most about woodworking is the opportunity to collaborate with a customer to make something that's not only beautiful and well-built, but personal.

Sometimes that means changing a color or adding a name. Other times, it's incorporating a meaningful date, a favorite pastime, or a cherished memory into a piece.

And sometimes, as we discovered with one very special birdhouse, thoughtful details can turn a handcrafted creation into a family heirloom.

A Birdhouse with a Very Personal Story

One of my favorite examples of what personalization can accomplish is a birdhouse we made for someone pretty special to us: Johnny, my business partner Joanna's father.

Johnny is a lifelong, avid bluewater big-game fisherman. He and his wife have a beautiful home on the Carolina coast, where they've been enjoying time on their back deck, watching the birds and other wildlife that visit.

With Johnny's 80th birthday approaching, we wanted to give him something that would feel right at home in that setting while celebrating something he's loved his entire life.

Our Tin Can Alley #2 Bait and Tackle Shop Birdhouse seemed like just the thing.

"A bait-and-tackle-inspired birdhouse, personalized for Johnny’s 80th birthday."

A Coastal Classic, Built with a Carpenter's Eye for Detail

Our Tin Can Alley design takes its inspiration from the old-fashioned bait and tackle shops of the 1950s and '60s. You know the kind. Those places along coastal roads and near fishing holes where you could pick up a few supplies, swap fishing stories, and maybe learn where the fish were biting.

Built from Western Red Cedar and pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine, this birdhouse is a substantial piece of woodworking. Measuring approximately 20 inches by 16 inches by 12 inches and weighing six pounds, it's as much an architectural accent for the home or garden as it is a functional birdhouse.

Finished in Dove Gray, with a Forest Green pitched roof and crisp White Trim, the design features detailed siding, framed windows, and a generous front porch with railings. Carefully chosen fishing-themed accessories complete the nostalgic setting.

Every component contributes to the character of the finished piece, and the proportions, joinery, and finishing are approached with the same attention I give to larger woodworking projects.

It's a piece intended to be admired up close, one that reveals more of its craftsmanship the longer you look.

"Small details bring the old-fashioned bait shop to life."

I like to think any bird taking up residence would be perfectly happy to hang out a sign that says, "Gone Fishin'!"

But as much character as the original design already had, we wanted Johnny's birdhouse to tell his story.

Johnny's Bait & Tackle Shop — Est. 12-23-1944

We decided to give Johnny a bait and tackle shop of his very own.

I crafted a custom wooden sign for the front porch that read:

Johnny's Bait & Tackle
Est. 12-23-1944

Of course, December 23, 1944, wasn't the date a bait shop opened for business. It was Johnny's birthday.

That personalized sign transformed our Tin Can Alley birdhouse into a one-of-a-kind tribute to 80 years of life and a lifelong love of fishing.

It was thoughtful, a little playful, and perfectly suited to the coastal home he and his wife love.

And the best part?

Johnny loved it.

"Johnny’s name and birthdate made this little bait shop uniquely his.”

The birdhouse was designed to complement their home and the wildlife they enjoy, but its personal significance is what makes it something the family can treasure and pass down through generations.

That's one of the greatest rewards of this work. Knowing that something I've built may become part of a family's history is worth every minute spent in the workshop.

Why Planning Ahead Makes a Difference

Johnny's birdhouse is a good example of something I tell customers when they're considering a handcrafted gift: you don't have to have every detail figured out before you contact us.

That's part of the enjoyment of custom woodworking.

You might see a birdhouse you love but want it painted to complement someone's home. Maybe you'd like a planter in a special color, a family name incorporated into a decorative piece, or something designed around a loved one's favorite hobby.

Sometimes the perfect gift begins with nothing more than a conversation.

At Pilkington Woodworks, we're happy to collaborate with you on those ideas. We can talk about materials, colors, finishes, personal touches, and what might make a particular piece especially meaningful to the person receiving it.

But there's something important to understand about handcrafted work.

Good craftsmanship takes time.

Wood needs to be selected, measured, cut, fitted, assembled, sanded, and finished. Custom features may require additional design and fabrication. Paints and finishes need time to dry and cure properly.

And because our pieces are made by hand, we can only complete so many projects at a time.

That's why starting your holiday shopping early has some real advantages.

It gives us time to explore your ideas, work through the details, and schedule your project without the pressure of a last-minute deadline. More importantly, it allows us to give the piece the attention it deserves.

After all, the whole point of commissioning something handcrafted is to own something exceptional. Rushing the process defeats the purpose.

Made to Last. Made to Mean Something.

I've spent a good many years working with wood, and I still take pride in turning raw materials into something useful, attractive, and built to last.

But there's a difference between making something and making something that means something.

A handcrafted birdhouse can be a beautiful addition to someone's home. A carefully designed, architectural birdhouse inspired by a nostalgic bait and tackle shop can become a conversation piece.

But one bearing a loved one's name and birthdate, created to celebrate 80 years of life and a lifetime on the water?

Well, that's a gift with a story.

And that's how heirlooms begin.

Not necessarily because something is old or expensive, but because it was made with care, carries personal meaning, and becomes part of a family's memories.

The hope is that years from now, someone in Johnny's family will look at that birdhouse, read the sign, and remember the man whose love of fishing inspired it.

To me, that's what makes handcrafted work worth doing.

Let's Make Something Special This Holiday Season

If there's someone on your Christmas list who deserves something out of the ordinary, now is a good time to start thinking about it.

Take a look at the birdhouses, planters, and other handcrafted creations at PilkingtonWoodworks.com. You might find something that's perfect just as it is. Or you might see a piece that inspires an entirely different idea.

Either way, we'd love to hear from you.

Explore the Tin Can Alley Birdhouse.

Tell us a little about the person you're shopping for. What do they enjoy? What makes them smile? Is there a hobby, a favorite color, a special memory, or a family tradition that could become part of the design?

You bring the story. We'll bring the craftsmanship.

And together, we just might create something that will be treasured long after the wrapping paper is gone.

Because the best gifts don't just say, "Merry Christmas." They say, "I know you. I thought about you. And this was made just for you."

Now, that's a gift worth planning ahead for.
